Kevin Blackwell enjoyed a long and rewarding career in non-league and the lower leagues, with notable spells at Boston United – for whom he made 227 appearances – Scarborough and Plymouth Argyle.
Playing his last professional game in 1997, at the age of 39, he took up coaching roles at Huddersfield Town, Plymouth, Bury and Sheffield United, on each occasion working under experienced manager Neil Warnock.
Blackwell moved into the role of club manager for the first time at Leeds United in 2004. He guided the club to the Championship play-off final in 2006, before repeating the feat at Sheffield United in 2009. In between, he managed Luton Town.
